G&H News - December 2016

Hi Jae

In this issue of G&H News we focus on the Queen's awards won by two G&H companies; fostering young engineering talent in the community; OCT for glaucoma diagnosis; AOTFs for spectrometry in space and cold atom commercialization.

Two Queen's Awards in One YEar

Two Queen¡¯s Awards in One Year

To gain one Queen¡¯s Award is impressive; to gain two in one year is an astounding achievement. This year in April, Kent Periscopes, one of our recently acquired companies, was given the Export Award whilst Gooch & Housego (Torquay) was given the Innovation Award. Both awards were formerly presented to the companies in November.

Talent of tomorrow

Fostering the Talent of Tomorrow

It's always great when we can give back to the community. At our Torquay facility we have strong track record of engaging with and enthusing young people to become the engineers of tomorrow. We were pleased to able to take part in the Techbay event on Friday 11 November at the Riviera Centre, Torquay. Not least because the event also provided an occasion to celebrate the success of our own apprentices.

OCT Systems for Glaucoma Diagnosis

Next Generation OCT Systems for Glaucoma Diagnosis

We¡¯re excited to announce the start of work on a new OCT research project. GALAHAD (Glaucoma – Advanced, Label-free High Resolution Automated OCT Diagnosis). The project, inaugurated in December and funded as part of the EU Horizon 2020 program, will develop and apply research into high resolution OCT for glaucoma diagnosis based on a revolutionary low cost multiband supercontinuum light source.

ExoMars programme

G&H¡¯s Acousto-Optic Technology Enables the Characterization of Mars Atmosphere

Two G&H AOTFs were integrated into the NOMAD instrument aboard the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO). NOMAD was successfully tested on 29 November 2016. Read how acousto-optic technology sits at the heart of the spectrometer due to start sampling the Martian atmosphere in 2017.

Quantum Tech

Fiber Optics for Quantum Technology Research

G&H have successfully won funding for involvement in two R&D programs - CASPA and REVEAL, in a competition for the commercialization of quantum technologies. The programs will aim to develop systems or CubeSat payload research and interferometry for subterranean surveying. The contest is supported by Innovate UK and the UK National Quantum Technologies Programme.
