Facts about the COUNT® Photon Counter
Laser Components’ single photon counting modules (SPCM) achieve an unrivaled quantum efficiency of over 70% in the red region. Another advantage of these photon counters over modules currently available on the market is their significantly higher quantum efficiency in the blue spectral range. In addition, these modules are perfectly suited for measurements across the entire wavelength range from 400-1000 nm.
Special Geiger-Mode APDs
The COUNT® series is based on a silicon Geiger-mode APD developed specifically for this series. It is one of the lowest-noise APDs on the market. Together with electronics that has been optimized down to the smallest detail, this APD represents the heart of the COUNT® module. Available in a compact housing, the photon counter can be integrated into your application without a problem.
Standard modules are available with dark count rates ranging from 20 to 250 counts. Modules with <10 cps (counts per second) are also available.
These modules either come with an easy-to-use FC connection for optical fibers that have a core diameter of up to 105 µm or as a free-beam module. Thanks to its compact housing and plug & play compatibility with photon counters currently available on the market, replacing existing SPCMs with the COUNT® module is child’s play.
Single Photon Counting Modules - COUNT®blue Series
LASER COMPONETNS expands its award-winning COUNT® series of single photon counting modules to include the new COUNT®blue devices. These combine the phenomenally low count rates of the existing modules with even higher detection efficiencies at shorter wavelengths. Over 60% of incoming photons can be detected at 405 nm, over 65% in the green, while the detection efficiency in the red is typically >50%. The unique semiconductor design ensures stable count rates and zero bi-stability. The excellent short wavelength performance makes the COUNT®blue the ideal choice for a wide variety of applications in fluorescence spectroscopy, time-resolved single molecule detection and confocal microscopy.
The COUNT®blue features the same robust design as the existing modules and is mechanically compatible with other commercially avalable photon counting modules. The optional fiber connector allows easy plug&play connection to the sample and allows background light to be effectively eliminated.
Single photon counting modules with a detection efficiency >50% at 810 nm!
The COUNT® NIR is a single photon counting module for the NIR. It features an APD with enhanced detection efficiency around 810 nm. This wavelength plays an important role in quantum cryptography applications.
The outstanding performance is based on a proprietary APD design that was developed by the LASER COMPONENTS Detector Group out of Arizona. This is what gives LASER COMPONENTS the opportunity to take the technology to where their customers need it to be.

The COUNT® Q features an integrated InGaAs APD and covers the spectral range from 900 nm to 1600 nm.
An absolute highlight is the COUNT® Q. Many of the customers work at wavelengths that silicon does not cover any more. The COUNT® Q features an integrated InGaAs APD and covers the spectral range from 900 nm to 1600 nm. For best performance, the APD is thermoelectrically cooled. Just like the silicon APD-based COUNT® modules the focus during the development of the COUNT® Q has been on high detection efficiency and low dark current.
